Il past simple di un verbo si usa per descrivere azioni del passato che sono completamente concluse

I was in Paris a week ago        --------------------
They were at school yesterday
Ero a Parigi una settimana fa.   ------------------
 Erano a scuola ieri.

La forma negativa si costruisce inserendo not dopo il verbo (contratta wasn't- weren't)
I was late ----------------
I wasn't late
They were late ----------
They weren't late

La forma interrogativa si costruisce mettondo prima il verbo e poi il soggetto
You were
late yesterday --------------- Were you late yesterday?

Uso
Il past simple del verbo be si usa per descrivere azioni del passato.
I was ill last Monday

Was the weather nice last week?              No, it wasn't
Era bello il tempo lasettimana scorsa?       No

Per dire quando o dove è nata una persona in inglese si usa sempre il past simple, (was/were + born)

When were you born?     I was born on February 19th
Quando sei nato?           Sono nato il 19 febbraio
